Demanding a Public Inquiry into the Eglinton LRT Fiasco

To Premier Doug Ford, Minister Sarkaria, and the Government of Ontario,

While the Eglinton LRT appears that it may finally be approaching completion after 15 years, Torontonians deserve answers and accountability for the years of delays and billion dollar cost overruns.

Communities across the line have endured over 12 years of hardship due to the endless disruptions from construction. Businesses have lost revenues due to lower foot traffic, forcing many to close, while residents have suffered incredible disruption and unmanageable traffic and safety issues.

Despite calls from City Council and the public demanding greater transparency and accountability, Metrolinx refuses to explain the reasons for the repeated delays. This is completely unacceptable.

I am calling on the province to launch a full public inquiry into the line’s failures. We are demanding full transparency and accountability from Metrolinx for the communities and small businesses that have been treated like collateral damage due to their incompetence.

As Metrolinx delivers other major projects across the City—the Ontario Line and the Scarborough Subway Extension— we need real accountability to ensure that the mistakes on Eglinton aren’t repeated again.

A public inquiry is the only way to restore accountability and give the people of Toronto the answers they’re owed and to ensure that lessons are learned moving forward.
