Job Description:

Councillors are responsible for advancing the interests of residents in the ward and across the City, including through casework and policy. To be successful, Councillors must be able to communicate effectively and reach a broad audience. The Digital Communications Advisor is responsible for developing and executing a communications strategy, including producing multimedia content, including written communications, video, and graphics.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated video production skills, strong written communication skills, social media management experience, and a familiarity with current events. We also value experience with policy or political advocacy.

What will I be doing?

  1. Conceptualize, script, film, edit, and post video content
  2. Develop and execute a social media strategy to ensure consistent posting and engagement with comments and direct messages
  3. Work closely with the policy team to integrate the legislative and communications strategies, and advise on policies and current events which require amplification
  4. Produce written communications for social media, newsletters, media relations materials, and email correspondence
  5. Provide daily overview of news with an analysis of emerging issues and current events relevant to the City and our Ward
  6. Provide advice on content ideas and help bring creative concepts to life
  7. Keep up with social media trends and local creators across platforms
  8. Communicate with constituents on local issues and policy matters
  9. Maintain awareness of ward, community and city-wide municipal matters, and other matters affecting the municipality, the Councillor and their constituents.
  10. Ability to handle and prioritize numerous complex tasks simultaneously, while under pressure with tight deadlines
  11. Maintain confidentiality with respect to issues involving the City and the Councillor, and adheres to the City’s Conflict of Interest Policy
  12. Undertake special assignments as requested by the Councillor

Qualifications:

  • College diploma or University degree in a related field, or equivalent experience, with 2-3 years' experience in similar role
  • Experience with video production and a portfolio of videos which the candidate has filmed and edited, including videos filmed on phones and digital cameras
  • Experience writing a variety of products, adjusting tone to different audiences and for various purposes, including for social media, information products, and scripts
  • Extensive social media management experience, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Bluesky, YouTube, Mailchimp, and aggregation platforms
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Initiative to proactively identify and resolve problems and issues
  • Creativity to produce engaging content that is aligned with our priorities
  • Highly developed ability to navigate work in a fast-paced environment managing many priorities and actively monitoring and responding to emerging issues
  • Excellent judgment in communicating with various audiences, including on sensitive issues, and in escalating matters where necessary
  • A team mentality and willingness to assist colleagues with work outside your normal areas of responsibility when necessary
  • Available to work evenings and occasional weekends as required
  • A valid G driver's license is considered an asset

This a full-time permanent position starting as soon as possible. This position will be based out of City Hall.
